Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson Photographs and PortraitsOil portrait By J. Reb“Stonewall” Jackson’s military campaigns in 1861-1863 made him an international celebrity. Through illustrated newspapers and mass-produced carte-de-visite photographs, his face became familiar to millions. The many different representations of Jackson were based on only a handful of portraits made from life: so-called “source” images.
The Museum of the Confederacy’s photographic and print collections include more than 100 images of Jackson. Aside from a few fanciful portraits, all are based on the source images. This gallery of selections from the Museum’s holdings shows the source images, variations on them, and the representations derived from them.
