The Museum’s Photographic Collection is rich and diverse, both in subject and in photo process. It consists of more than 6,000 original images, and has an array of outstanding examples of 19th Century Photography.
Along with thousands of research prints, there is also a secondary collection of more than 7,000 slides, negatives and color transparency copies of original images, objects and manuscripts from the Museum’s vaults.
Our Digital Photography Initiative has added over 500 original digital photographs of museum objects and over 2500 scans of original photographs and documents to the Museum’s holdings.
The Photographic Collection is one of the best-known and most widely used sources of wartime illustrations for Civil War books, magazines and video productions.
