The Museum of the Confederacy has been sponsoring lectures on Confederate and Civil War history since its earliest years. Dr. Hunter Holmes McGuire, “Stonewall” Jackson’s physician, was one of the first to deliver a lecture to a museum audience.
Currently, the Museum presents two major annual lectures. The Museum of the Confederacy Symposium in February is cosponsored with The American Civil War Center and the Library of Virginia and is hosted by the Library. The Elizabeth Roller Bottimore Lecture in September, made possible by an endowment from the Roller Bottimore Foundation, is cosponsored with and hosted by the University of Richmond's History Department.
In addition to those two larger lectures, the Museum has started to offer monthly brown bag lunch talks to commemorate the sesquicentennial of the Civil War. Held both in Richmond and Appomattox, VA, these talks delve into topics large and small, but generally center around an event that happened during that month 150 years ago.

Join us as noted historians Gary Gallagher, Harold Holzer, John Marszalek, Joe Mobley, and Craig Symonds as they reveal their nominees for the person(s) who most influenced or personified the events of 1864. The 2014 Symposium is co-sponsored by the American Civil War Center and the Library of Virginia and takes place from 9:30am - 4:00pm on February 22nd. Who will join past selections Abraham Lincoln (1861), Robert E. Lee (1862), and Ulysses S. Grant (1863) as the next Person of the Year?
