Every second Wednesday of the month, the Museum of the Confederacy and the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park are partnering to bring the Civil War Sesquicentennial to Appomattox. Each month, a knowledgable speaker will lead a discussion on a topic or event's 150th anniversary. The talks will take place upstairs at Baine's Books and Coffee.

Greg Biggs, former Associate Editor of Blue & Gray Magazine and flag aficionado, will lecture about the banners of 1861 and the passion that created them.  Guests will also be treated to tours of the Museum’s Flag Vault.  Hors D’Oeuvres and Spirits will be provided.  Email Will Glasco to reserve your spot.

Throughout the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War, the Museum of the Confederacy-Richmond will be hosting a monthly series of talks devoted to a topic or event's 150th anniversary. These talks, normally scheduled for the third Friday of the month, are free for members and Richmond area residents, and are included with Museum admission for all others.

Learn about Rose O’Neal Greenhow, who drowned off the Cape Fear River, Elizabeth Van Lew the Richmonder who helped Union soldiers escape from Libby Prison, Mary Chesnut, diarist and neighbor of Jefferson Davis, Hetty Cary, the belle of the South, Buck Preston, the beauty from South Carolina, and more.

What varieties of herbs would’ve been in the gardens of people living in the Piedmont area of Virginia? Bonnie Swanson, president of the Master Gardeners of Appomattox County, will share information about herbs that were grown and used to treat ailments, flavor food, and clean the house.  This presentation will take place at the fledgling herb garden at the Museum of the Confederacy in Appomattox. Come and see some of the herbs used during this time period and compare their purposes with our modern uses.

This program will run twice, once at 11am and again at 2pm.

Christian McWhirter, author of the book Battle Hymns: The Power and Popularity of Music in the Civil War, will lecture on “The Confederate Search for a National Anthem" and discuss the various contenders for that status and why they succeeded or failed.  He will share recordings of period songs, exposing the audience to songs both familiar and not so familiar. This presentation will be included with paid museum admission.
