Abraham Lincoln’s Visit to the Confederate Executive Mansion

Richmond served as the capital of the Confederate States of America from May of 1861 until it was surrendered to the Union army on April 3, 1865.  On April 4, 1865, Abraham Lincoln came to Richmond.  Setting foot on the Richmond docks, Lincoln asked to be taken to Union army headquarters, which was housed in the former executive mansion of the President of the Confederacy. He met briefly with the general commanding the Union forces and also granted an audience to the former Assistant Secretary of War of the Confederacy, Judge John Campbell.
