Throughout the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War, the Museum of the Confederacy-Richmond will be hosting a monthly series of talks devoted to a topic or event's 150th anniversary. These talks, normally scheduled for the third Friday of the month, are free for members and Richmond area residents, and are included with Museum admission for all others.
By the winter of 1863-1864, the population of Belle Isle had swollen to twice its intended size, with an estimated 6,000 to 8,000 enlisted men on the island. Disease, malnutrition, and exposure were ever-present killers. However, Belle Isle was just one of many prisons where men suffered and died.
Join Manager of Programs and Education, Kelly Hancock to learn how prisoners of war coped with their dire conditions. Bring your lunch to the Museum and commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.
