The MOC will feature living history and free admission to the Museum for Civil War and Emancipation Day. The day will conclude with the panel discussion “Union Spies in Richmond, the Difference Between Fact and Fiction” (from 3:30pm-4:30pm) about the life and legend of Mary Elizabeth Bowser, a supposed Union spy planted in the Confederate White House.
University of Richmond President and historian Dr. Edward L. Ayers will moderate a discussion featuring Dr. Elizabeth Varon, professor of history at the University of Virginia and author of Southern Woman, Yankee Spy: The True Story of Elizabeth Van Lew, a Union Agent in the Heart of the Confederacy, and Lois Leveen, author of the recent novel, The Secrets of Mary Bowser. They will particularly address the differences between researching and writing true history and historical fiction. Many other historical institutions and museums will also be offering free admission and special programs. Visit www.civilwar.emancipationday.net to learn about what else is going on around the city.
