George Thomas Civil War Conversation

Every second Wednesday of the month, the Museum of the Confederacy and the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park are partnering to bring the Civil War Sesquicentennial to Appomattox. Each month, a knowledgable speaker will lead a discussion on a topic or event's 150th anniversary. The talks will take place upstairs at Baine's Books and Coffee.

At the beginning of the war, men of Southern heritage, who were serving in the U. S. Army, were given a choice: resign and join their home states in the Confederacy or remain in the Army. A Virginian who remained was George Thomas, who became one of the very best of the Union generals. In September 1863, he saved the Union Army from disaster in northern Georgia, earning his nickname as the “Rock of Chickamauga.” Only two months later, his men carried the supposedly impregnable Confederate position on Missionary Ridge outside Chattanooga.
