Longstreet's Suffolk Campaign Brown Bag Lunch Talk

Throughout the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War, the Museum of the Confederacy-Richmond will be hosting a monthly series of talks devoted to a topic or event's 150th anniversary. These talks, normally scheduled for the third Friday of the month, are free for members and Richmond area residents, and are included with Museum admission for all others.

With the end of the winter of 1862-63, Robert E. Lee realized that he could not feed the Army of Northern Virginia from the region around Fredericksburg. He dispatched Gen. James Longstreet, with his whole First Corps, to the vicinity of Suffolk, Virginia, to gather foodstuff from southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. Longstreet began a long and unsuccessful siege of Suffolk before retiring. The good news: he came back with plenty of food. The bad news: his return was not in time to participate in the Battle of Chancellorsville.
