Quantrill’s Sack of Lawrence, Kansas, and the Un-civil War Brown Bag Lunch Talk

Throughout the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War, the Museum of the Confederacy-Richmond will be hosting a monthly series of talks devoted to a topic or event's 150th anniversary. These talks, normally scheduled for the third Friday of the month, are free for members and Richmond area residents, and are included with Museum admission for all others.

On August 21, 1863, William C. Quantrill and a force of 450 Confederate guerrillas burned the Unionist stronghold of Lawrence, Kansas, and killed at least 150 civilian men and boys. It ranks as the most famous guerrilla attack of the war, but was only one round in a cycle of violence in Missouri and Kansas. This program will discuss the Lawrence raid in the overall context of the guerrilla warfare that raged throughout the South during the war.
