| In the 1890s, the former Confederate White House was saved by a group of Richmond women, who formed the Confederate Memorial Literary Society. The White House of the Confederacy opened as the Confederate Museum on February 22, 1896. The organization promptly became the premier national repository of Confederate artifacts, acquiring the majority of its world-famous collection between 1896 and World War I.
