The Museum of the Confederacy offers interactive outreach programs to students within a 190-mile radius. Utilizing our handling collection and a PowerPoint review of the American Civil War, our trained educators bring history to life in the classroom. The total program time is approximately 45 minutes. Choose one of the four interactive programs designed to cover the Virginia Standards of Learning.

Program Options
 African Americans: From Slavery to Emancipation— This hands-on program examines African-American life through reproduction objects and historic photos. Student volunteers try their hands at carding cotton and being a soldier in the United States Colored Troops. Themes covered include slave life, work roles, "King Cotton," the Underground Railroad, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the Civil War Amendments. Offered to 4th - 5th grades. Life on the Homefront— During this hands-on program, students experience jobs that opened to women, children, and African-Americans as a result of the war. Students learn the duties of a nurse, roll cartridges, and sign treasury notes before participating in a shopping spree to discover how inflation and shortages limited what civilians could purchase. The Common Soldier— This program explores the day-to-day life of the common soldier of the American Civil War. Student-volunteers actively participate by trying on reproduction uniforms and learning the nine steps of loading and firing a rifled-musket. Instruction covers the reasons soldiers fought, the uniforms they wore, the equipment they carried, the food they ate, and advances in weapons technology. Offered to 4th - 7th grades. Medical Practices of the Civil War— From health and hygiene to field surgery, this program introduces students to the grim world of Civil War medicine. Volunteers pass a physical, perform triage, and act as assistant surgeons during a mock amputation. The use of reproduction 19th century medical equipment makes this program intriguing to all age levels. Designed to expose many of the myths about medicine of the time, attention is given to the reasons behind the high disease rate, the use of anesthetics, and the purpose for amputation. Additional students are charged $3. A minimum purchase of two presentations or 55 students is required. Within a 61 to 120-mile radius: $125 per presentation (up to 30 students). Additional students are charged $5. A minimum purchase of two presentations or up to 55 students is required. Within a 121 to 190-mile radius: $125 per presentation (up to 30 students).
