The Eleanor S. Brockenbrough Library has an extensive collection of documents, maps, prints and more relating to the Confederate States of America. To explore the Library’s collections, click here. The Library offers the following research services:
Onsite Research Appointments Researchers may make an appointment to use the library’s collections in advance. Appointments are $10.00 for the public and free for Museum members. This fee includes admission to the Museum’s exhibits. All appointment must be scheduled in advance ~ preferably two weeks ~ by emailing or writing the Library (see address above). No calls please.
Correspondence Research Research may be performed by our staff via correspondence at a rate of $10.00 for the first hour (waived for members) and then $30.00 for every hour after for detailed requests requiring more time. Please submit your inquiry in writing, being sure to include your mailing address. Fees must be prepaid before research results are mailed.

Object Worksheet Fee Object worksheets are schematic drawings that detail an artifact, providing general information and dimensions. These are intended for personal use only. You must obtain written permission to reproduce artifacts from the Museum’s collection. Existing worksheets are $30.00 each for the public and $15.00 each for Museum members. Additionally, researchers requesting the creation of new object worksheets for artifacts will be charged correspondence research fees at the rate described under library services. The Museum’s photographic collection of more than 6,000 images, most dating to the mid-19th century, includes daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, albumen prints, stereographs, and cartes-de-visite. To learn more about our photographic collection, click here. The Museum provides the photographic services to the public, educators, authors, researchers, publishing companies, media, and other organizations for educational, publication, exhibition, public project, or one-time only personal use. All requests for photographic services must be submitted in writing and be pre-paid and are handled in the order in which they are received. Costs for reproduction of materials from the Museum’s collections are usually the sum of two fees: production and use. Use fees do not apply to reproductions made for personal uses. The Museum also reserves the right to deny requests at its discretion. Click here for a downloadable version of the Photographic Services Fee Schedule.
General processing time for custom printed black-and-white or color copy prints from existing negatives is four to six weeks. New photography is required for objects with no existing negative or color transparency, and requires additional processing time. No rush orders are accepted for new photography. All negatives and color transparencies are retained by The Museum of the Confederacy.
Requests for images for publication, exhibition or public project use… must be submitted on company letterhead. A complete project summary is necessary and should include the following:

Official written permission for use, along with credit line information, will be forwarded pending project approval and payment of the required usage fees.
Requests for images intended for personal use… must be submitted in writing. Detailed information pertaining to the individual or topic of search helps to process the request more quickly. Include the following in the letter letter: Purchaser’s name (printed), complete mailing address (not email address), and a daytime telephone number. Specify in writing that the request for images is for personal use only.
