As part of its educational mission, The Museum of the Confederacy annually offers teachers a professional development course. The week-long Teachers Institute includes lectures, tours, living history, and discussions led by Museum staff and guest lecturers designed to expand teachers' resources for dealing with the complex subjects relating to the American Civil War in today's classrooms. Held each year during the last week of June or the first week in July, the Institute offers a curriculum anchored by The Museum's unparalleled collections and archives, staff experience, and guest lecturer expertise. The course is designed not only to provide an in-depth look at a chosen topic each year but also to assist teachers in earning re-certification points.
Who Should Attend: Elementary, middle, or high school educators, teaching in a public, private, or home environment, with a desire to broaden their knowledge of the American Civil War are invited to attend. The Museum seeks participants from a diversity of grade levels and school settings with a wide range of personal and professional interests.
The Benefits Of Attending: A detailed look at the Civil War in a relaxed environment. A certificate of completion and eligibility for re-certification credit. Exciting new ideas and a sense of confidence about historical issues. A FREE notebook with lesson plans and copies of primary source documents to take back to the classroom.
Registration: Registration is limited to 20 participants. Qualified applicants are accepted on a first come, first served basis. The registration fee of $110 includes all sessions and tours, lunch each day and the notebook.
